Microsoft DirectX is a bundled set of Application Programming Interfaces (API) required for running many of the multimedia features in the Windows Operating System. Users of Windows Vista and Windows 7 can quickly and easily update their system to the most recent DirectX release available from the Microsoft Website. However this latest version is not backwards compatible with Windows XP, so those running XP should not update DirectX to the latest release. Windows XP users who have mistakenly downloaded the latest release can rollback to DirectX 9, which is compatible with their system. In this article you will learn how to download the latest DirectX release. Users of Windows XP will also learn how to rollback to an XP-compatible version of Microsoft DirectX.

Up until version 9.0c, the latest version of DirectX was generally available as a separate download from Microsoft. However, from version 10 onwards, the latest update for DirectX is available only for specific operating systems and under very controlled circumstances.

Microsoft can claim to have monopolised the world of PC gaming by introducing it into the Windows operating system. By downloading DirectX, an application programming interface, the user gets direct access to the system hardware, facilitating multimedia tasks such as game and video programming.

Thus, in June 1996 the first version of DirectX was born, available for Windows 95 and NT 4.0. Although it got off to a slow start, the popularity of downloading DirectX began increasing. However, there were competitors such as OpenGL, which earned a good reputation. The advantages of its interface were a more efficient use of hardware, a standard multi-platform royalty-free API and no restriction to a single operating system, as was the case with DirectX and Windows.

With its pros and cons, downloading DirectX has since become the most common option. This is because Windows remains the most popular operating system on computer desktops. This is in addition to other uses, such as the Xbox One.

Please note when downloading DirectX that not all versions of Windows offer the same compatibility. Therefore, it is necessary to check each version. The main differences are between Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7, compared to previous versions.

A specific optimisation that improves performance is included when downloading DirectX 12. It takes advantage of the existing system resources, especially in the CPUs, by using more than four cores for processing and several multi-GPU configurations.

However, the initial reception was not as expected, and it was necessary to wait for subsequent updates for the advantages to become noticeable. The problem with downloading DirectX 12 has been the complexity of extracting its full potential, especially in memory management and multi-GPU, as well as technology that enables asynchronous computing.

To download DirectX in its latest version, you must know in advance which version of Windows you are working with. From Windows 8, Microsoft includes the APIs in the operating system. And Windows version 8.1 offers support for up to DirectX 11.2, and as with Windows 10, there is no regular manual download. The latter works exclusively with DirectX 12, and can be accessed from Windows Update, through the tab Update Settings > Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates.

For Windows 7, the latest version supported is 11.1. It can be updated manually or with Windows Update and is available with the service pack or in the update KB2670838. For older versions, Microsoft maintains a specific page for downloads.

When downloading DirectX in its latest version, developers have the option of adding different high visual impact graphic effects. GeForce graphics cards also enable special features such as shading and ray tracing for realistic effects and much higher frame rates.

DirectX 12 does not have a manual standalone setup which can be downloaded separately. It comes directly from Microsoft Update. If you want to keep your DirectX version updated, you should enable automatic Windows Updates if disabled earlier. This will ensure that your DirectX 12 on Windows 10 is up to date. Tip: You can enable or disable Windows Update using the command line. The same procedure applies for Windows 8 (DirectX 11.1) and Windows 8.1 (DirectX 11.2)For Windows 7 (DirectX 11)If you are using Windows 7, you can download the DirectX 11 update for Windows 7 from here:

The DirectX software development kit (SDK) consists of runtime libraries in redistributable binary form, along with accompanying documentation and headers for use in coding. Originally, the runtimes were only installed by games or explicitly by the user. Windows 95 did not launch with DirectX, but DirectX was included with Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2.[4] Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 both shipped with DirectX, as has every version of Windows released since. The SDK is available as a free download. While the runtimes are proprietary, closed-source software, source code is provided for most of the SDK samples. Starting with the release of Windows 8 Developer Preview, DirectX SDK has been integrated into Windows SDK.[5]

APIs such as Direct3D and DirectSound need to interact with hardware, and they do this through a device driver. Hardware manufacturers have to write these drivers for a particular DirectX version's device driver interface (or DDI), and test each individual piece of hardware to make them DirectX compatible. Some hardware devices have only DirectX compatible drivers (in other words, one must install DirectX in order to use that hardware). Early versions of DirectX included an up-to-date library of all of the DirectX compatible drivers currently available. This practice was stopped however, in favor of the web-based Windows Update driver-update system, which allowed users to download only the drivers relevant to their hardware, rather than the entire library.

During the GDC 2006, Microsoft presented the XNA Framework, a new managed version of DirectX (similar but not identical to Managed DirectX) that is intended to assist development of games by making it easier to integrate DirectX, HLSL and other tools in one package. It also supports the execution of managed code on the Xbox 360. The XNA Game Studio Express RTM was made available on December 11, 2006, as a free download for Windows XP. Unlike the DirectX runtime, Managed DirectX, XNA Framework or the Xbox 360 APIs (XInput, XACT etc.) have not shipped as part of Windows. Developers are expected to redistribute the runtime components along with their games or applications.

Microsoft DirectX 10 is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX APIs.Many former parts of DirectX API were deprecated in the latest DirectX SDK and will be preserved for compatibility only: DirectInput was deprecated in favor of XInput, DirectSound was deprecated in favor of the Cross-platform Audio Creation Tool system (XACT) and lost support for hardware accelerated audio, since Vista audio stack renders sound in software on the CPU. The DirectPlay DPLAY.DLL was also removed and was replaced with dplayx.dll; games that rely on this DLL must duplicate it and rename it to dplay.dll.Here are a list of some improvements and modifications to the DirectX series up until the release of DirectX 10:Direct3D 9: emulates Direct3D 9 behavior as it was on Windows XP. Details and advantages of Vista's Windows Display Driver Model are hidden from the application if WDDM drivers are installed. This is the only API available if there are only XP graphic drivers (XDDM) installed, after an upgrade to Vista for example.Direct3D 9Ex: allows full access to the new capabilities of WDDM (if WDDM drivers are installed) while maintaining compatibility for existing Direct3D applications. The Windows Aero user interface relies on D3D 9Ex.Direct3D 10 for DirectX 10: Designed around the new driver model in Windows Vista and featuring a number of improvements to rendering capabilities and flexibility, including Shader Model 4.Overall: Due to the new driver model in Windows Vista and continuing through Windows 7, DirectX 10 is specially designed around those specifications, especially around ATI and nVidia cards. You can also find DirectX 9.0C on this page or stay on this page and select the DirectX 10 free download link to the right hand side.Compatibility and LicenseDirectX 10 is provided under a freeware license on Windows from components with no restrictions on usage. Download and installation of this PC software is free and 10 is the latest version last time we checked. 2ff7e9595c
